Job Summary
Maintain all LIRR rolling stock units and associated machinery in a state of good repair to provide a safe, reliable fleet for customers. Troubleshoot, repair, and install mechanical components of diesel locomotives, engines, and heavy equipment. Operate grinders, borers, lathes, and milling machinery to fabricate and shape parts while inspecting equipment for structural damage and wear. Clean tools and parts using wire brushes, torches, and solvents. Read schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals to complete assigned tasks and interpret engine fluid viscosity. Become qualified to troubleshoot, repair, and test air brake equipment in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration and LIRR codes.
Required Qualifications
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization
- Must have completed Machinist apprenticeship or have four years of related machinist or machine shop or diesel/heavy equipment experience as a journeyman, and ability to demonstrate proficiency via written exam
- Must possess mechanical ability and ability to use various electrical meters and testing devices
- Must possess ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints, shop drawings and/or schematics
- Must possess a working understanding of mechanical principles, specifically diesel mechanics
- Must possess a working knowledge of machine maintenance and lubrication procedures
- Must possess mechanical ability and/or knowledge to repair and install various equipment components
- Must possess working knowledge of hand and/or power tool operation and maintenance
- Must possess ability to demonstrate machinist skills via a pre-employment examination
- Must possess a valid driver's license
Desired Qualifications
- EPA Freon Handling Certification
- Electric and/or Arc Welding Certification
- Automotive, truck and/or aviation engine servicing experience
- Welding experience or certification
