Job Summary
Machine Learning Engineer for Rakuten's Recommendation and Personalization platform based in Tokyo. Lead end-to-end ML pipelines (data generation, training, evaluation, deployment) with a focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability. Deep-dive into models and data to improve data quality, feature coverage, and latency. Deliver production-grade models and reusable ML components (features, embeddings, ranking) and coordinate with cross-functional teams (BUs, data scientists, data engineers, analytics, product managers) to drive measurable business impact. Manage model retrains, monitoring/alerting, incident response, backfills, A/B test support, and production releases to meet platform SLAs. English as primary working language; Japanese is a plus. International JP-EU collaboration, with emphasis on cross-cultural teamwork.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field
- More than 3 years of hands-on experience in Machine Learning Engineering / Applied ML / MLOps (or closely related software engineering roles)
- Experience with ML fundamentals and workflows (feature engineering, model training/evaluation, production inference)
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
- Ability to collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, data engineers, analysts, and product managers
