Job Summary
Assess clients and document behavioral changes, vital signs, and withdrawal symptoms while monitoring treatment progress. Administer medications as ordered, conduct medication audits, and manage emergencies including suicide threats and code green situations. Facilitate educational groups, assist with patient admissions and discharges, and coordinate external healthcare needs. Maintain chart accuracy, stock supplies, and ensure compliance with safety protocols and confidentiality requirements. Work under RN supervision in a substance use detox facility, adhering to BHS policies and professional standards.
Required Qualifications
- Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
- Licensed Psychiatric Technician (LPT)
- Work under the supervision of an RN in a substance use detox subacute hospital
- Knowledge of withdrawal management
- Ability to recognize symptoms associated with chemical dependency and detoxification
- Ability to identify and assist in management of emergencies
- Ability to safely and accurately administer medications
- Ability to obtain and record vital signs
- Ability to conduct medication audits and destroy outdated medications per policy
- Ability to assist with orientation, admission, transfer, and discharge of clients/patients
- Ability to follow directions and orders of physicians and registered nurses
- Ability to monitor and document withdrawal symptoms
- Ability to assess and document patient treatment progress, medical or behavioral changes, and unusual incidents
- Ability to participate in nursing assessments
- Ability to adhere to professional standards
- Ability to maintain health and safety standards of facility
- Ability to observe universal precautions, including correct handling of blood borne pathogens, storage of lab specimens, and disposal of infectious wastes
- Ability to comply with confidentiality requirements at all times
- Ability to maintain familiarity with BHS policies and procedures and other applicable regulations
- Ability to recognize personal biases working within diverse populations
- Ability to maintain cultural sensitivity at all times
- Ability to identify a crisis
- Ability to demonstrate appropriate techniques for interventions, including AMA, behavioral issues, suicide threat, code green, and contraband on the unit
- Ability to carry out appropriate interventions, including responding to emergencies and performing CPR and/or first aid
- Ability to recognize the symptoms associated with chemical dependency and detoxification
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and standards
- Ability to treat clients with respect, care and concern
- Ability to remain calm while performing job duties
- Ability to interact with clients/patients to support their participation in the program
- Ability to make presentations and facilitate educational groups & sessions as needed
- Ability to work as a member of the treatment team
- Ability to carry out the nursing care plan and treatment plan
- Ability to order inventory, and/or stock supplies in the unit
- Ability to assist clients with self-administration of PRN and other medications as ordered by physician
- Ability to courteously answer phones, appropriately directing calls and taking messages
- Ability to make phone calls for clients as approved by the nurse in charge
- Ability to handle clients' personal belongings as directed
- Ability to run errands within the facility and respond to requests for assistance from the nurse in charge, the DON, and other authorized staff
- Ability to attend meetings and participate in committees as assigned
- Ability to successfully complete a medication test
