Job Summary
Locomotive Mechanic inspects, repairs, and maintains locomotives in accordance with company policies and FRA regulations, and performs mechanical maintenance as required. Responsibilities include using gauges and testing equipment, completing FRA reports, potentially qualifying as a Service Engineer, interpreting instructions, observing equipment operation to identify issues, dismantling and repairing components with hand/power tools, recording hour meter readings, inspecting locomotives for various systems and defects, and ensuring safety equipment and maintenance practices meet company standards. Basic knowledge of welders, torches, hammers, jacks, pneumatic tools, forklifts and cranes is noted; qualification pathways include FRA-related certifications, a Railroad Apprenticeship, and the TWIC credential.
Required Qualifications
- High School or GED equivalent
- Must be able to pass and/or obtain all reporting, testing, and certifications required for this position (troubleshooting and repair of motors, generators, and transformers)
- Must possess valid driver’s license and be insurable by company insurance provider
- Have or be able to obtain Class B CDL
- Have the ability to become a qualified Service Engineer according to FRA regulations
- Able to complete a three-year Railroad Apprenticeship, if required
- Must have a TWIC card or be able to obtain one upon hire
