Job Summary

Cover key business of Lancaster, Pendle, Ribble Valley, Rossendale and West Lancashire councils, including political and social issues affecting their communities. Attend council meetings and key decisions in a timely manner, building contacts to understand and explore local stories. Write features and break exclusives with work that may appear on the BBC Homepage or be used by other local media partners. Travel regularly to various councils, requiring access to your own vehicle. This hybrid role is linked to the Manchester Evening News newsroom, part of Reach's team of 165 reporters holding local authorities to account. Candidates must be located in or around Lancashire or ready to relocate.

Required Qualifications

  • NCTJ or NQJ qualified journalist
  • Currently located in or around Lancashire, or be ready to relocate
  • Access to your own vehicle

Desired Qualifications

  • Ideally with 100wpm shorthand skills (or be currently working towards this)
  • Previous experience reporting on local government/councils
  • A good knowledge of social media and how you can use it to drive audience and engagement from the people in your area
  • Ideally have access to your own vehicle
