Job Summary
Coordinate music ministry for all parish liturgies, including leading choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists, while selecting music and planning liturgy with the pastor and Liturgy Commission. Recruit, schedule, and rehearse music ministries for celebrations such as weddings, funerals, and major feasts. Educate the parish on music and liturgy per the Second Vatican Council vision, serving as a resource for the parish council, religious education, and clergy to foster musicianship. Formulate the music budget, maintain the liturgical music library and instruments, and establish music policies aligned with diocesan guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- Membership in professional organizations
- Attendance at national and area conferences and workshops
- Periodic coursework in the field of pastoral liturgy and liturgical music
- Research, development, and mastery of new music
- Pursuit of educational advancement in musical skills relating to the parish's need (e.g., organ, choral directing, vocal pedagogy)
- Keeping current with official statements and documents on music, liturgy, and developments in the pastoral field
- Studies of various liturgical and musical publications
- Practices to improve or maintain skills in voice, conducting, and instruments
- Education and experience in music and liturgy according to the vision of the Second Vatican Council
- Ability to educate the parish in areas of music and liturgy
- Ability to serve as a resource person for the liturgical music education of the parish council, Liturgy Commission, and pastoral staff
- Ability to serve as a resource person in liturgical music for the religious education process
- Ability to foster and develop the musicianship of parish music ministers and clergy
- Ability to coordinate workshops and concerts
- Ability to coordinate the music ministry for all parish liturgies
- Ability to assume the role of leading musician (accompanist or choral director)
- Ability to make creative choices of music and exercise judicious placement for all liturgical celebrations
- Ability to recruit, schedule, and rehearse various music ministries (e.g., choirs, cantors, instrumentalists)
- Ability to plan liturgy (working with the priests and Liturgy Commission) including leading the Liturgy Commission
- Ability to secure proper copyrights for all worship participation aids
- Ability to work with the Director of Religious Education and education staff in the preparation of children's liturgies
- Ability to meet with engaged couples for the preparation of wedding liturgies and preparing music for funeral liturgies
- Ability to make liturgical music policies in conjunction with the Liturgy Commission and pastoral staff, taking into consideration Diocesan and national guidelines
- Ability to formulate a music budget for the parish worship program
- Ability to develop and maintain a liturgical music library of various styles and genres for assembly, choir, cantor and instrumentalists
- Ability to maintain the parish's musical instruments
- Ability to make recommendations for the purchase of new instruments, sound equipment, hymnals and music supplies
- Ability to secure other musicians as needed for special celebrations, such as Christmas, Easter, Confirmation, etc.
