Job Summary
The role provides linguistic support for the DOJ’s Linguistic Support Services, including translation of documents and media in various formats, transcription of audio/video, and interpretation (court/deposition) across domains such as legal, medical, financial, scientific, and cybersecurity. Materials are legal in nature and may require handling sensitive information with strict confidentiality. The contractor must demonstrate extensive experience in the language, superior English/editing skills, ILR 4 proficiency (or equivalent), US residence within the last 5 years, prior experience with law enforcement/legal departments, and eligibility for US citizenship or green-card status with SSN. The position requires native-language fluency with professional command of English, fidelity to source tone/register, and adherence to linguistic ethics; active Public Trust or higher clearance is required; remote work is possible with some travel; location includes National Capital Region and CONUS locations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience accumulated within the past ten years in the required language along with superior skills in English and editing
- Qualifying scores ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (does not have to be consecutive)
- Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Must be a U.S. citizen; Naturalized citizen; or Green Card holder with a Social Security Number
- Know both English and foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual modes of communication in various contexts, including colloquial slang, idiosyncratic slang, and regionalisms
- Know specialized vocabulary (and terminology) in both English and the foreign language related to the Government’s varied roles and missions, as well as possess research and analytical skills to make critical judgments regarding terminology, including expertise in the use of translation resources, monolingual reference materials, and online material
- Write in their native language fluently, but still have professional command of the non-native language
- Translate in a manner that is factually and conceptually accurate without changes, omissions, or additions
- Preserve the tone and register of source language materials
- Abide by relevant code of linguist ethics
- Clearance: Active Public Trust or higher security clearance

- Travel: Some travel may be required
