Linux Systems Administrator (12 month contract)

Job Summary
Deploy and manage hybrid infrastructure ranging from bare-metal OpenStack clusters to public cloud integrations for Alberta's research and education sectors. Engineer R&E platforms, handle end-to-end hardware-to-software lifecycle maintenance, and modernize operations using Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Ansible. Provide Tier 3 technical support to member organizations for system integration and logging tool connectivity. Participate in a compensated on-call rotation as needed. Work in a hybrid environment with flexible hours, including 35-hour weeks (32 hours in July/August with Fridays off), alongside health, vision, and professional development benefits.
Required Qualifications
- Solid Linux knowledge (you know your way around the kernel and shell)
- Comfort with virtualization/containers
- A 'tinkerer' mindset for hardware troubleshooting
- A strong grasp of monitoring and alerting philosophy
- Experience with managing diverse compute environments
- Comfort navigating the nuances of private cloud orchestration (OpenStack)
- Comfort navigating the nuances of public cloud providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- An interest in building robust pipelines for system data
- Understanding how to ingest, transform, and route high-volume logs and event streams (leveraging technologies like Vector, FluentD, or Kafka)
- A satisfactory police information check
