Job Summary
Maintain vigilance with 180-degree scanning of the pool zone, ensuring the aquatic environment is free of obstructions and safe for participants. Respond immediately to emergency situations, including water, respiratory, or cardiac incidents, adhering to the "safe-in-six" model and Emergency Operations Plan. Perform chemical checks, enforce pool rules consistently, and maintain accurate records per state health department codes. Recognize visual and verbal distress signs within 10 seconds and execute water rescues while wearing proper attire and equipment. Complete required trainings, including CPR/First Aid/AED, and attend scheduled staff meetings. Promote fundraising efforts and model YMCA values of caring, honesty, and respect to ensure a safe, clean facility.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 15 years of age (with Red Cross certification; 16 for YMCA. If you are 15 years of age, a Work Permit will be required prior to starting employment)
- YMCA lifeguard certification or if Red Cross certified, switch over to YMCA within 6 months of hire
- Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2
- Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check
- Ability to pass lifeguard water test and meet requirements of ongoing drills
- Must be able to remain alert
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
- Ability to recognize visual and verbal distress signs/actions from potential drowning victim within 10 seconds
- Ability to respond to victim in water within 10 seconds
- Ability to respond to an emergency situation including but not limited to: water emergency, respiratory or cardiac emergency, minor/major first aid and Code Adam/missing person
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
