Job Summary
Maintain active surveillance of the pool area utilizing the "effective 10/20 scanning strategy," ensuring staff follow proper guidelines and correcting deviations when needed. Respond to emergencies and relay reports in accordance with YMCA and American Red Cross policies. Perform and document proper equipment and chemical checks using appropriate protocol. Attend all staff meetings, required training, certification courses, and monthly in-service training. This role supports the South Oakland Family YMCA's mission of youth development and healthy living. The position offers free American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and flexible scheduling within a family-friendly work environment.
Required Qualifications
- At a minimum, some high school level education
- Over 16+ years of age
- Ability to hear and observe distress signals in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility
- Skills to meet strength and lifting requirements
Desired Qualifications
- 1 year of experience
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard license
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- Basic First Aid
- AED
- Emergency Oxygen
