Job Summary
Lifeguard responsible for the safety of all pool-area patrons under the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, providing vigilant 180-degree scanning, enforcing pool rules, and responding immediately to emergencies per YMCA policies. The role includes maintaining and updating lifeguard certifications, performing chemical checks, completing required trainings, supporting member engagement and fundraising efforts, and contributing to a safe, welcoming environment for guests and staff. Training in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 is provided; certification maintenance and background checks are required. Physical readiness for water rescues and the ability to communicate clearly in high-stress situations are essential.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum age 15 (16 for YMCA) with Red Cross certification; YMCA lifeguard certification or switch over to YMCA within 6 months if Red Cross certified
- Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2
- Complete trainings including New Employee Orientation, Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, Sexual Harassment (upon hire and annually)
- Satisfactory background checks including criminal and Child Protective Services checks
- Must maintain all relative certifications
- Lifeguard duties including surveillance, emergency response, reporting, and safety compliance
- Ability to perform chemical checks and operate in aquatic environment safely
- 18+ to access pump room for chemical duties
- Follow safety procedures and center Emergency Operations Plan
