Job Summary
Maintain rescue readiness by holding a rescue tube, whistle, and pocket mask while scanning your assigned zone from an elevated position or pool edge. Enforce non-swimmer protection rules, correct risky swimmer behavior immediately, and clear the pool if conditions become unsafe. Perform off-scan duties including water chemistry tests and document results. Promote the YMCA annual campaign and adhere to all brand guidelines. Work 9:00am to 8:00pm shifts in Freeport, Maine. Free personal membership and paid leave included.
Required Qualifications
- 16 years of age or older
- Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification
- AED certification
- Basic First Aid certification
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to travel locally
- Criminal background check clearance (including fingerprinting through OCFS)
- Ability to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time
- Ability to lift a person off the bottom and out of the water
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, sit, use hand to handle or feel, reach with arms and hands
- Ability to occasionally climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch
- Comfort in the water
- Ability to talk, taste, smell and see (both near and far)
- Ability to continuously articulate and communicate clearly and precisely
- Ability to demonstrate competency in all skills and activities required to obtain, maintain and renew lifeguard, CPR, AED and first aid certifications
- Ability to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
- Ability to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment
- Ability to continuously concentrate on activities in the area of responsibility
- Ability to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness
- Ability to frequently understand and relate to ideas, generally several at a time, and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form
- Ability to frequently remember verbal and written tasks
