Job Summary

Provide direct supervision and maintain high safety standards during recreational, fitness, and instructional swims at the James P. Gills Branch. Monitor the environment and swimmers' wellbeing, administer first aid, and report suspicious activity or child abuse concerns. Keep the deck and locker rooms clean, organize equipment, and follow opening and closing procedures. Engage in positive public relations with members while modeling the SMART pledge and pool safety. Report for duty ten minutes before pool opening and attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings. Maintain a current life guarding certification and complete required YMCA training modules within 30 and 90 days of hire.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Professional Rescue CPR or Basic Life Support certification
  • First Aid certification
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification
  • Oxygen Administration (O2) certification
  • Intro to the Ys Cause & Culture training
  • Y's Way to Service & Engagement training
  • I Hear You: Service with CARE training
  • Child Abuse Prevention in and Aquatics Environment training
  • Foundations of Listen First training
  • Current life guarding certification (Red Cross accepted, must cross-over to YMCA within 90 days or first available training)
  • Effective communication and human relations skills
  • Ability to pass a swim and skills test annually
  • Maturity and ability to relate to children and adults from all social/economic segments of the community
  • Physical endurance to sit and stand for extended periods of time indoors or outdoors
  • Ability to maintain continual physical endurance for 15-30 minutes of aerobic activity
  • Ability to give and receive detailed instructions
  • Ability to assist with pool maintenance including pool covers
  • Alertness at all times
  • Auditory and verbal capabilities in order to monitor environment and swimmers wellbeing
  • Auditory and verbal capabilities to effectively communicate with swimmers and staff
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Physical ability to perform a rescue
  • Knowledge of all emergency procedures
  • Ability to administer first aid
  • Ability to report for duty as scheduled, at least ten minutes before pool opening

Desired Qualifications

  • Certified Pool Operator
  • Life Guard Trainer certification
  • Get SMART certification
  • Broad overview of the YMCA as it operates as a local, national, and international movement
