Job Summary
Conduct constant surveillance of the pool area using scanning techniques to achieve a 10x10 reaction time, responding immediately to emergency situations and hazardous conditions. Greet members, develop relationships, and promote aquatic programs including lap swimming, swim lessons, and group exercise classes to encourage retention and engagement. Provide swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages, plan culturally relevant activities, and maintain constant supervision to ensure a positive learning environment. Ensure cleanliness of pool decks, check for hazards, and apply safety rules in accordance with YMCA policies. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required while representing the organization's mission and core values.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum age 16 years old
- Current Lifeguard or Swim Instructor certification required by Hire Date
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required by Hire Date
- Current Oxygen Administration certification required by Hire Date
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and holidays as needed
- Must be willing to work an on-call schedule rotation as required
- Must possess auditory, verbal and visual capabilities in order to adequately communicate via phone and in person
- Must possess the physical ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a professional water rescue
- Must possess the physical ability to pass a lifeguard water test and perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a professional water rescue
- Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind
- Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to monitor environment and members' well-being
- Must possess the physical ability to work with hazardous chemicals (i.e., pool chemicals, cleaning solutions, disinfectants, etc.)
- Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals (i.e., pool chemicals, cleaning solutions, disinfectants, etc.)
- Must complete successful background screening, which includes criminal and employment verification
Desired Qualifications
- Previous lifeguard or swim instructor experience a plus
- Previous customer service experience preferred
- YMCA Lifeguard certification preferred
- Red Cross Lifeguard certification is acceptable but must receive YMCA certification within 60 days
- YSL (YMCA) Certification or WSI (American Red Cross)–w/crossover training
