Job Summary
Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas by providing continuous, uninterrupted scanning of the aquatic zone. Enforce safety rules and policies while performing equipment checks and responding immediately to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA procedures. Complete related reports, maintain accurate records per state Health Department code, and conduct periodic aquatic safety assessments. Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, and risk management while demonstrating the Six Pillars of Character.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum age of 18
- Current YMCA Lifeguarding certification
- American Safety & Health Institute or American Red Cross or American Heart Association BLS for the Professional Rescuer certification
- Standard/Community First Aid certification
- Emergency Oxygen Administration certification
- Ability to tread water for 2 minutes (legs only)
- Ability to swim 250 yards of front crawl
- Ability to swim 50 yards of front crawl with the head up
- Ability to swim 50 yards of breaststroke
- Ability to swim 50 yards of breaststroke with the head up
- Ability to perform elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest
- Ability to perform a feet-first surface-dive in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet
- Ability to sprint for approximately 60 feet and perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 8 to 10 feet
- Ability to pick up an object from the bottom of a pool, tread water for at least one minute, and replace the object
- Ability to swim the remaining length to the end of the pool and hoist oneself out of water
- Ability to immediately begin CPR on an adult manikin for 2 minutes
- Ability to sit for extended periods in an elevated chair while remaining alert and focused
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distances
- Ability to communicate swiftly and clearly with emergency personnel over the telephone and in person
- Ability to effectively give and receive directions
- Ability to act swiftly in an emergency and take action even when unsure whether a person is really in danger
- Ability to maintain required certification
- Demonstration of lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
- Ability to uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management
- Demonstration of the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness)
- Demonstration of YMCA Core Values of Caring, Respect, Honesty and Responsibility
