Job Summary

Life Support Systems Technician at Mystic Aquarium is responsible for daily operations, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of aquatic life support system equipment to ensure high standards of animal care. The role involves monitoring and modifying water treatment processes, installing equipment, and assisting the Manager of Life Support Systems. Responsibilities include maintaining clean and safe work environments, inventory control, operating and repairing life support equipment (filters, pumps, protein fractionators, UV sterilizers, ozone generators, chemical dosing equipment, heat exchangers, and process instrumentation), following SOPs, collaborating with cross-functional teams, developing procedures, handling hazardous materials per SDS and PPE guidelines, and being available for after-hours emergencies. Qualifications emphasize a Bachelor’s degree preferred, 1 year of hands-on mechanical/LSS experience, PVC plumbing knowledge, experience with aquatic chemistry, AALSO Level 1 certification or ability to earn within 1 year, tool and power tool operation, electrical/control knowledge, ability to read P&IDs/blueprints, MS Office proficiency (TRACKS preferred), valid driver’s license, physical stamina to lift 75 lbs, and willingness to work variable schedules including weekends/holidays. Additional requirements include SCUBA certification or the ability to pass a swim test, and multilingual ability with Spanish preferred. The role involves collaboration with Zoological Operations staff, veterinarians, and external contractors to ensure animal welfare and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline preferred
  • 1 year of hands-on experience operating LSS or other mechanical systems
  • Plumbing (PVC primarily)
  • Maintenance of pumps, filters, valves, and ancillary equipment
  • Experience with chemistry in aquatic animal systems
  • Aquatic Animal Life Support Operator (AALSO) Level 1 Life Support Certification or ability to become certified within 1 year
  • Tools/power tools, machinery, and heavy equipment operation
  • General knowledge of electrical systems and control applications
  • Able to interpret technical/mechanical drawings and schematics (P&ID’s, blueprints, diagrams)
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications; TRACKS experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Physical ability to lift 75 lbs. and work in varied environments
  • Able to work after hours, weekends, and holidays
  • Multilingual; Spanish speaking preferred
  • SCUBA certification or ability to pass swim test
