Job Summary
Independently perform the full range of practical nursing care and related technical work for patients across East Hawaiʻi. Conduct patient preparation for prescribed treatments, observe and record physical and mental conditions, and provide comfort measures while adhering to asepsis and infection control principles. Submit copies of BLS certification and State of Hawaii licensure within one month of employment. This role supports East Hawai'i Health Clinics in caring for friends, family, and neighbors, with experience preferred for full performance levels.
Required Qualifications
- State of Hawaii license to practice as a practical nurse
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant)
- Knowledge of the nursing process
- Knowledge of body structure and function
- Knowledge of principles of asepsis
- Knowledge of universal precautions
- Knowledge of infection control
- Knowledge of principles of administering medications
- Knowledge of patient preparation for prescribed treatments and procedures
- Knowledge of data-gathering techniques
- Knowledge of interpersonal communication skills
- Knowledge of alternative methods of communication for patients with special needs
- Knowledge of environmental and patient safety
- Knowledge of patient rights
- Knowledge of individualization of care, including religious, cultural and developmental influences
- Knowledge of patient age groups and the developmental process characteristic of these age groups
- Knowledge of team participation in care planning and evaluations
- Knowledge of therapeutic and life-saving procedures
- Knowledge of specialized equipment
- Knowledge of maintenance of optimal body functioning and prevention of complications
- Knowledge of principles of body mechanics and assistive devices
- Knowledge of comfort measures
- Knowledge of obvious signs of emotional and mental health problems
- Knowledge of chemical dependency
- Knowledge of adaptive and maladaptive behavior
- Knowledge of sensory deprivation and overload

- One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in a hospital or similar health institution as a licensed practical nurse, licensed vocational nurse, or registered professional nurse
- Experience with a caseload of patients requiring performance of a variety of personal care, nursing care and related technical work
- Demonstrated possession of the knowledge of practical nursing principles and practices including patient age groups and the developmental process characteristic of these age groups
- Ability to apply practical nursing principles and practices in providing care/treatment appropriate to the age, medical condition and/or developmental status of the patients served
- Ability to observe, record and report on the general and specific physical and mental conditions of the patients
- Ability to report on signs and symptoms which may be indicative of significant changes in the condition of the patients
- Current Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant)
