Job Summary
Conduct security patrols across 23 Austin Public Library locations, including parking lots and surrounding areas, to identify unsafe conditions. Respond to fire and security alarms, investigate disturbances, and maintain order during emergencies while directing traffic and providing crowd control for after-hours events. Safeguard cash pickups and drop-offs, monitor electronic access and CCTV systems, and enforce criminal trespass notices when necessary. Complete incident reports, provide direction and training on non-violent crisis intervention, and serve as the first point of contact for law enforcement. Work seven days a week in shift rotation with varying hours, including weekends and holidays, while maintaining a visible presence to ensure a safe environment for staff and patrons.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent
- One (1) year of experience in a field related to the job
- Valid Texas Driver License
- Ability to acquire a Valid Texas Class C Driver's License within 90 days of hire date
- Ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English
- Knowledge of Federal, State, Local laws, and ordinances
- Knowledge of city practice, policy, and procedure
- Knowledge of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and practices in libraries
- Skill in oral and written communications
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing
- Skill in data analysis and problem solving
- Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations

- Must meet City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite
- Cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months
- Must be able to attend City of Austin and Austin Public Library training as scheduled
- Must be able to communicate effectively with law enforcement
- Must be able to enforce library policies to support a safe and welcoming environment
- Must be able to provide visible safety and security services for Austin Public Library facilities
- Must be able to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for employees and patrons
- Must be able to conduct security patrols at branch locations, other Library facilities, parking lots/garages, and surrounding areas
