Job Summary
The Legislative Assistant supports NACo’s advocacy and policy initiatives by analyzing federal legislation, preparing policy materials, and assisting with committee meetings. Key responsibilities include drafting legislative updates, contributing to policy analyses and communications, and performing legislative research related to Finance, Pensions, and Intergovernmental Affairs. Ideal candidates possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, strong communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office. This entry-level position offers exposure to federal advocacy strategies while requiring the ability to manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, government, social science or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communications skills
- Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel proficiency
- Solid understanding of the federal government and legislative process
- Interest or previous experience in Finance, Pensions and Intergovernmental Affairs & Justice and Public Safety or a related policy area
- Detail oriented, organized and able to multi-task while meeting several deadlines
- Able to work well under pressure
- Able to thrive in a bipartisan environment
- Self-motivated
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
Desired Qualifications
- Prior internship or professional experience on Capitol Hill, within a federal agency, local government or related policy organization
