Job Summary
Research laws, prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda, and render opinions on liability, damages, and value for the Claims Department. Handle pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, and examinations under oath while defending matters by trial or dispositive hearing. Maintain good standing admission to the Texas Bar and travel to attend trials, hearings, and management meetings. This Counsel role supports GEICO Staff Counsel in defending first-party insurance lawsuits across Texas courts, leveraging the company's 1936 history as a Berkshire Hathaway member and one of the nation's largest auto insurers.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in litigation experience on insurance/defense/and or personal injury
- Juris Doctor degree
- Admission to the Texas Bar
- Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in Texas and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
- Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited, to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences
- Must be able to document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner, to be understood by customers, clients, co-workers and other employees of the organization
- Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
