Legal Counsel – Commercial, Privacy & Compliance

Job Summary

Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements covering vendor, technology, advertising, and lead-generation matters. Provide practical legal advice to business, product, and executive teams on day-to-day and strategic issues, including privacy, consumer protection, and compliance with TCPA and data regulations. Monitor regulatory developments to translate requirements into policies and processes, while reviewing consumer-facing experiences for compliance. Manage litigation, demand letters, and disputes, and conduct due diligence on partners and transactions. Support corporate governance, employment, and intellectual property matters, and oversee legal vendors and contract execution workflows. Integrate AI and legal technology into daily work to enhance efficiency and knowledge management, developing templates and automation while maintaining human oversight.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant legal experience, including law firm and/or in-house experience
  • Law degree and active membership in good standing in at least one applicable U.S. or Canadian jurisdiction
  • Strong commercial contract drafting and negotiation experience
  • Excellent legal research, drafting, analytical, negotiation, and issue-spotting skills
  • Ability to independently manage matters, prioritize competing demands, and exercise sound judgment regarding escalation
  • Practical, solutions-oriented approach and ability to communicate legal risks clearly to non-legal stakeholders
  • High degree of discretion and comfort handling sensitive and confidential matters
  • Strong interest in generative AI, legal technology, and technology-enabled ways of working
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to incorporate AI into everyday legal work
  • Must be able to work in a fully in-office role in Victoria, BC
  • Must be located in Victoria, BC (not accepting applicants outside of this area)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas preferred: privacy and data protection, advertising and marketing law, consumer protection, technology, corporate governance, employment, or commercial disputes
  • For Canada-based candidates, experience supporting U.S. businesses or working with U.S. legal and regulatory requirements is strongly preferred
  • Prior experience with specific AI platforms
