Job Summary
Legal Assistant to support attorneys and paralegals with a broad range of administrative and paralegal tasks in a fast-paced Michigan law firm. Responsible for drafting, proofreading, and formatting pleadings and other legal documents for court filings or client delivery; managing deadlines and calendars; opening new client matters and conducting conflict checks; maintaining files and handling e-filings and document-management tasks (iManage, Office 365, Adobe Acrobat); assisting with billing and pre-bills; coordinating communications with clients, attorneys, and staff; and providing confidential, professional support to ensure timely, accurate work. Requires strong proofreading/editing, solid legal terminology knowledge, excellent written/verbal communication, organizational and time-management skills, and a collaborative approach to team-based work.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma required
- Associate or bachelor's degree preferred
- Minimum of four years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department
- Solid understanding of legal terminology and grammar
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word
- Willingness to enhance technical skills
- Strong proofreading and editing abilities
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective communication (oral and written)
- Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Teamwork and ability to interact with attorneys, clients, and staff
- Time management and prioritization in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with document management systems (iManage) and e-filings
- Experience with time/billing software
- Ability to draft, update, proofread, and format pleadings, agreements, and other legal documents
- Managing attorney calendars and scheduling
- Handling electronic filings
- Handling business development expenses
