Lead Systems Engineer - Systems Design

Job Summary

Perform system design studies, deliver reports, and produce specifications for HV equipment while witnessing equipment testing and providing technical guidance to peers. Develop and industrialize solution tools, processes, and design guides for new HVDC technologies, including control and protection solutions. Represent the business externally by publishing technical papers and participating in working groups such as CIGRE, IEC, and IEEE. Adhere to company policies, Code of Conduct, and Health and Safety prevention protocols, including attending EHS training. Requires a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, minimum 3 years in HVDC studies, and 20% travel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering including power systems and power electronics subjects (minimum 2:1)
  • Proven professional experience and technical expertise in the field of power system engineering
  • Experience preferably in HVDC System Studies
  • Minimum 3 years experience of network or transient studies for HVDC/FACTS/Renewable Energy/Inverter based Power Systems
  • Able and willing to travel 20% including international and comply with GE travel guidelines
  • Professional Engineering license
  • Willing to review and seal your work and the work of others under your supervision

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of system tools like PSCAD
  • Insulation coordination and main equipment characteristics for HVDC
  • A general understanding of the characteristics of HVDC Valves and their control & protection systems
  • An expertise of the use of computer mathematical and simulation tools as applied to the design of the aforementioned activities
  • Strong knowledge on High Voltage substation North American standards & guidelines (IEEE & ANSI standards and codes such as the NEC and the NESC.)
  • Knowledge of local Grid Codes
  • Knowledge of related equipment (safety, application, sizing and integration)
  • Ability to engineer design packages when no clear customer specification is provided
  • Strong knowledge on contract and project management, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), or Engineering equipment package (EEP) project execution
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering and substation related structural design requirements
  • Working knowledge of applicable design calculations for primary & secondary equipment such as battery sizing & DC system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus, fittings, insulator, and arrector selection, ground grid design, and lightning protection
  • Experience with HVDC projects and technology
  • Field-testing and commissioning experience with safe work habits
  • Demonstrated electrical and mechanical troubleshooting capability
  • Excellent personal computer skills, including programming and design automation, and familiarity with AutoCAD
