Job Summary
Lead R&D Engineer (Hybrid) at Nitro, driving a small, autonomous team to rapidly build and experiment at the intersection of AI and document workflows. Build proof-of-concept products, ship working prototypes, gather real user feedback, and iterate quickly. Role emphasizes leveraging AI to develop web and desktop applications, AI assistants, intelligent document processing pipelines, workflow automation, MCP servers, and AI services integrated with Nitro’s API platform. Responsibilities include setting technical direction, leading rapid prototyping and production-worthy prototypes, collaborating with cross-functional teams, evaluating emerging technologies, and championing new ideas to move successful experiments toward production. Required focus areas include modern software development (JavaScript/TypeScript, Python), real-world AI/LLM shipping, AI development patterns (embeddings, RAG, prompt engineering), cloud-native deployments (AWS/Azure), rapid prototyping, ambiguity tolerance, and strong leadership and communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- A builder first mentality
- Experience building modern software with strong full-stack skills (JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks, Python)
- Real world hands-on experience building AI or LLM-powered applications and shipping them
- Deep fluency in modern AI development patterns (embeddings, RAG, prompt engineering, tool use, agent architectures)
- Experience deploying cloud-native applications on AWS or Azure
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly prototype and ship working solutions in short timeframes
- Strong architectural instincts balanced with pragmatism
- Comfort with ambiguity—able to start without a detailed brief
- Experience mentoring or leading engineers with ability to set technical direction for a team
- Excellent communication skills to motivate a team and explain a prototype’s value to engineers, PMs, or customers
- Active use of AI coding tools to accelerate development and enable agentic code authoring
