Job Summary
Plan and implement developmentally appropriate preschool programs, including educational activities, games, small group projects, and innovative lessons that introduce math and literacy concepts. Supervise Assistant Preschool Teachers, child care aides, and volunteers while ensuring appropriate teacher/student ratios and maintaining clean, safe equipment and facilities. Provide personal care support, including diapering, and establish routines with positive guidance. Communicate with parents regarding child development, progress, and program expectations, and report accidents or safety concerns immediately. Maintain accurate client files, complete student observations, and attend required training sessions.
Required Qualifications
- At least 21 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Minimum of an associate degree in child development or early childhood education (30 semester or 45 quarter hours of college credits with 10 semester/15 quarter hours directly related to child development with 1 years (1560 clock hours of work experience in childcare), OR the equivalent (defined as 64 semester hours or 90 quarter hours in any discipline with a minimum of 21 semester hours of college credit in child development, early childhood education or early childhood special education) O...
- Either a Gateways to Opportunity Level I Illinois Director Credential (see 89 Ill. Adm. Code 50.720(b) https://www.ilgateways.com/docman-docs/credentials/additional-information/1648-administrative-training-and-coursework-examples/file OR 3 semester hours of college credit or 3 points of credential approved training in administration, leadership or management
- Knowledge of computer programs, including Word, Excel and Internet
- Ability to read staff manuals, memoranda, and attendance sheets
- Ability to complete attendance sheets, accident reports, incident reports and behavior reports using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, and style
- Ability to give verbal direction to subordinates, communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, citizens, and the public as well as other employees; speaking extemporaneously
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public, to greet the public in a courteous manner and good communication skills
- Ability to attend staff meetings, training sessions and workshops, when requested
- Comply with Gateways continuing education requirements
- CPR, AED and First Aid
- Food Handler Certification
- Lead Safety Training within six months of employment
- Ability to lift child (up to 50 lbs) when necessary
- Ability to lift program equipment
- Subject to prolonged standing while conducting programs
- Inside environmental conditions approximately 75% of the time and outside work 25% of the time
- No effective protection from the weather conditions or temperature changes
- Contact with the general public in city-owned buildings
- Respond to questions and complaints
- Provide general direction to the public
- Regular contact with other City employees
- Qualifying pre-employment processes, including medical examination, drug/alcohol screen, employment verification, and criminal background check
