Lead Network Engineer

Job Summary
Design, implement, and maintain enterprise and mission-critical network infrastructure, including LAN/WAN, wireless, and ground station connectivity. Lead network architecture decisions for ground control systems supporting stratospheric flight operations and own security architecture covering firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection. Manage relationships with ISPs and satellite providers while developing documentation and disaster recovery plans. Lead troubleshooting for complex network incidents affecting mission operations and partner with IT, Avionics, and Ground Systems teams to ensure reliability. Mentor junior staff on best practices and support after-hours or on-call response for critical communications links.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of network engineering experience, including 2+ years in a lead or senior capacity
- Deep expertise in routing and switching (Cisco, Juniper, or similar), including BGP, OSPF, and VLAN architecture
- Strong understanding of network security principles, firewalls, and VPN technologies
- Experience designing and supporting mission-critical or high-availability network environments
- Hands-on experience with network monitoring and management tools
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to lead incident response
- Ability to lift and carry networking equipment up to 40 pounds
- Ability to work in server rooms, crawl spaces, and equipment racks as needed
- Support occasional after-hours or weekend activities during maintenance windows or company events
Desired Qualifications
- CCNP, CCIE, or similar advanced networking certification
- Experience with satellite, RF, or long-haul wireless communications links
- Familiarity with SCADA, industrial control networks, or aerospace ground systems
- Experience with SD-WAN and zero-trust network architectures
- Background supporting network infrastructure in aerospace, defense, or telecommunications
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for complex, multi-site network environments
- Ability to lead and mentor other engineers while remaining hands-on
- Excellent communication skills to translate technical network issues for non-technical stakeholders
- Detail-oriented with strong documentation habits
- Comfortable balancing enterprise IT priorities with mission-critical operational needs
