Job Summary
Lead MRI Technologist supervises staff, coordinates activities with the Imaging Department Director, and serves as the Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer. Perform complex tasks operating high field strength magnets, select pulse sequences, and evaluate scans for technical quality before sending to PACS. Maintain established policies, quality assurance programs, and ACR accreditation standards while ensuring four MRI safety zones are followed. Assist radiologists in developing new protocols, perform biopsies, and administer contrast media injections or lab draws as prescribed. Provide six hours of annual in-services to technologists and nursing staff, participate in performance appraisals, and make work assignments. Screen patients for safety, obtain consents, and position patients using immobilization equipment. Coordinate scheduling, patient flow, and inventory control while performing payroll edits. Works full-time, 80 hours per pay period, day shift.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year MRI experience or equivalent
- Must have and maintain ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT certification
- State licensure in accordance with Tennessee guidelines
- Must maintain the four (4) MRI safety zones per ACR guidelines
- Must be able to identify and screen patient and others according to MRI guidelines for safety
- Must be able to obtain patient history, complete and verify accurate consents, informed consent and/or permits as needed
- Must be able to provide patient instructions/education to obtain desired results, gain cooperation and minimize anxiety
- Must be able to monitor of patients by audio/visual means during exams
- Must be able to position patients for MRI scans using immobilization and protective equipment to comply with regulations while applying principles of magnetic resonance safety to minimize risk to patient, self and others
- Must be able to provide for psychological and physical needs of patients for MRI procedures
- Must be able to practice aseptic technique and apply universal precautions at all times
- Must be able to apply appropriate infection prevention techniques and processes
- Must be able to identify, prepare and/or administer medications as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner
- Must be able to perform venipuncture or IM injection for contrast media or other ordered/per test design medication as necessary for MRI procedure being performed within scope of practice
- Must be able to load and operate pressure/power injector for contrast media injection
- Must be able to perform lab draws as applicable
- Must be able to assist radiologist with MRI procedures (biopsies, etc.)
- Must be able to assure time outs are performed
- Must be proficient in clerical skills
- Must be able to assist in inventory control
- Must be able to educate, train, orient and assist new staff members
- Must be able to provide education for student technologists
- Must stay current in Basic Life Support (BLS) and perform BLS as needed
- Must complete required education assignments annually
- Must be able to participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested
- Must be able to coordinate scheduling and patient flow
- Must be able to make work assignments and direct work activities
- Must be able to coordinate staff relief for meals, breaks, and meetings
- Must be able to perform payroll edits
- Must be able to consult with Imaging Director/Manager in determining MRI level I and level II training for employees/others
- Must be able to serve as Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) for the facility or may designate another MRI technologist or radiologist to serve in the MRSO role
- Must be able to maintain established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, general safety and MRI safety standards, and equipment quality control
- Must be able to acquire and maintain ACR, or other accreditation as required
- Must be able to assist in determining MRI educational needs
- Must be able to provide six (6) hours of in-services per year, including training, instruction, and education to imaging technologists, nursing and other related areas
- Must be able to participate in performance appraisal of staff
- Must be able to provide recommendations to the imaging manager in hiring process
- Must be able to prepare documentation and forms for possible disciplinary actions to director/manager
- Must be able to provide recommendations to manager for commendations, bonuses, or other appropriate forms of recognition for outstanding performance of employees on applicable shift
- Must be able to develop MRI protocols with guidance of radiologists/physicians
- Must be able to select and operate the magnetic resonance system, surface coils, physiologic gating devices and associated equipment to achieve desired results
- Must be able to select appropriate pulse sequences with consideration given to established protocols and other factors influencing data acquisition parameters
- Must be able to evaluate MRI scans for technical quality, post processing, complete MRI exam in electronic medical record and send to PACS
- Must be able to assist radiologist in developing new protocols and MRI imaging techniques
- Must be able to perform complex tasks associated with the operation of high field strength magnets and related equipment to produce high quality MRI images
- Must be able to obtain high quality MRI scans in a timely manner
- Must be able to provide supervisory leadership to MRI staff level employees
- Must be able to coordinate such activities with the Imaging Department's Director/Manager
- Must be able to provide assistance to radiologists, physicians, nursing and others in the care of MRI patients
- Must be able to exercise independent judgement and discretion in performing duties
- Must be able to maintain a safe MRI environment for all
- Must be able to resolve complex patient management and physician issues independently
