Lead Mechanical Designer

Job Summary

Lead mechanical design efforts for automation systems by utilizing SolidWorks CAD to develop 3D models, manage large assemblies, and create unique concepts while evaluating designs for manufacturability and tolerancing. Collaborate with clients, vendors, and internal teams to drive projects from concept through build, installation, and commissioning, providing onsite technical support and mentorship. Develop detailed technical prints, review drawings for accuracy, and integrate commercially available devices such as robots and pneumatics into work cells. Generate conceptual designs and sales concepts based on client requirements, estimate assembly and engineering hours, and refine engineering standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience as a full time mechanical designer
  • Local or willing to relocate near our HQ office in Aurora, Ohio
  • 3D design and detail experience using SolidWorks
  • Ability to work independently to create unique concepts and designs
  • Understanding of tolerancing and its impact on functionality and cost
  • Ability to build, organize and manage large assemblies within the SolidWorks environment while maintaining software stability
  • Practical knowledge of and experience in toolroom, fabrication, and assembly processes
  • Knowledge of materials properties to support material selection and treatment
  • Experience integrating commercially available mechanical devices into designs (Robots, pneumatics, servos, conveyors, etc.) with a basic understanding of controls integration and automation
  • Experience in designing various work cells (robotics, testing, etc.)
  • Communication and collaborative skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly with clients to understand requirements
  • Provide direction on industry methods to achieve project requirements
  • Evaluation of designs for functionality, manufacturability, and practicality
  • Evaluation of drawings for proper tolerancing
  • Develop detailed technical prints and review them for accuracy to ensure precision and minimize errors during the manufacturing process

  • Sales Experience
  • Estimating assembly, fabrication, and tooling components
  • Estimating engineering hours for design and development
  • Generating conceptual designs and sales concepts based on client requirements
  • Develop and refine RoviSys engineering standards
  • Understanding of mechanical safety requirements in industrial automation
  • Experience designing pedestals, robot stands, custom mounting and End of Arm Tools
  • Able to identify value add industry partners for tooling, fabrication, assembly, and engineering support
  • Project management experience
