Job Summary
Lead Inspector in the School Safety unit of RIS, NYC DOT, overseeing a group of inspectors and directing field investigations, data collection, and siting/installation of signage along K-12 school frontages. Responsibilities include supervisory tasks (monitoring workload, performance, and productivity), coordinating assignments to meet timelines, reviewing work for quality, and implementing process improvements. Field duties involve curbside/intersection inventories, traffic control and land use assessments, radar speed surveys, and traffic/pedestrian volume counts. Responsibilities also include data entry, databases maintenance, and preparing forms, reports, and memos. Proficiency with City transportation software (SIMS) and Microsoft Word/Excel is preferred. Requires New York State Driver’s License and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Required Qualifications
- 1) Master’s degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or
- 2) A bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
- 3) A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 2; or
- 4) An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 2; or
- 5) A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 2.
Additional Requirements
- New hires must reside in NYC for the first two years of employment.
