Job Summary
Lead Exhibit Fabricator/Carpenter at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, guiding the exhibit production shop in fabrication, installation, and maintenance of exhibit and decorative elements. Responsibilities include leading the production team, coordinating materials, tracking schedules and budgets, interpreting designs for fabrication, developing drawings with SketchUp/Autodesk, ensuring safety and durability, and traveling for installations as needed. Emphasis on expert carpentry, CNC millwork, mold making & casting, welding, scenic fabrication, and collaboration with designers, contractors, and staff to meet project deadlines and quality standards. Requires portfolio demonstration of fabrication skills, strong communication, and willingness to travel; fluency in Spanish is desirable; ADA considerations and safety compliance are integral.
Required Qualifications
- Three (3) years of experience in a professional three-dimensional production field, similar or related to production work at the Museum
- One (1) year of experience working as a production/team leader or in a shop management role with the ability to refine and implement shop procedures, lead projects from concept to installation and manage time efficiently
- Demonstrated expertise in fabrication methods including, but not limited to fine carpentry, CNC millwork, mold making & casting, welding, scenic fabrication and/or construction
- Must provide representative examples (a portfolio) of work and reference list representing fabrication skills and projects implemented
- Proven communication and listening skills across multiple audiences; ability to give and accept feedback
- Experience with purchasing, construction cost management, project management and construction documentation desirable
- Spanish fluency desired
- Must be able to travel for exhibit installs and de-installs, and occasionally preview future exhibits or participate in exhibit research trips
- Ability to perceive space and colors and read drawings and fabrication diagrams
- Risk management: safety compliance and ability to maintain safe shop environment

- Must be able to lift large objects up to 40 pounds
- Must be able to travel to cities and locations outside of Indiana
