Job Summary

Supervise, assign, and prioritize the work activities of Protection & Controls Engineering personnel to ensure compliance with NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE requirements. Develop, review, and implement standard documentation for transmission and distribution protective relays, including design drawings and relay setting calculations. Provide technical direction for root-cause analysis of disturbance events, corrective actions, and control center operating procedures. Manage system planning studies and interconnection requests while evaluating technology and equipment for asset renewal. Lead emergency response efforts and provide guidance during normal and emergency situations. This three-state role includes potential home work up to two days per week and requires travel to substations and operating districts.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the technical, operational, or engineering aspects of the electric utility industry
  • strong background in protection engineering

  • Supervises the work activities of personnel assigned to the Protection & Controls Engineering – Compliance, Standards & Support section
  • Ensures periodic compliance activities undertaken are in accordance with NERC, NPCC and ISO-NE requirements
  • Support the development of standards and procedures for compliance of the transmission and distribution protections systems in accordance with existing and future NERC, NPCC and ISO-NE requirements
  • Responsible for the initiation, development and revision of company standards and procedures in the development of Protection and Controls designs and relay settings
  • Support the development of standards and procedures for operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution system
  • Responsible for the evaluation and selection of technology and equipment for the system
  • Supervises the root-cause analysis of disturbance events, development, and implementation of corrective actions
  • Provides technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations
  • Manage work activities associated with development, review, and periodic update of control center operating procedures
  • Develops infrastructure strategy, operating philosophy, and technical basis for asset renewal decisions
  • Manage work activities associated with the System Planning group to provide design guidance and protections system performance details necessary for planning studies
  • Support work activities associated with the Interconnections group and Distributed Generation Group to provide design review and guidance for new transmission and distribution interconnection requests
  • Collaborates with other groups within Eversource Engineering to ensure consistency and teamwork
  • Develops employees through performance management, coaching, and as appropriate, rotational assignments
  • Assumes the role of Project Manager, as required
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs are involved
  • Job can require traveling to substations, operating districts, and companies within and outside the state
  • Employee may work from home up to two days per week however this is dependent upon adherence to company policies and ability to meet performance goals
  • Responding to emergency situations to meet customers' needs is part of every employee's role
  • If employed, you will be given an Emergency Restoration assignment
  • This position is responsible for supervising, assigning, prioritizing, and directing the work activities of a team of Protection & Controls Engineering personnel to perform activities related to the compliance, standardization and support for protective relays and associated systems for the transmission and distributions system
  • Compliance activities include the assignment, tracking and approval of periodic NERC, NPCC and ISO-NE compliance tasks
  • Standardization activities include the development, review, implementing and rollout of transmission and distribution P&C standard documentation such as design drawings, philosophies and relay setting calculation files
  • The support activities include the delegation and response to protection system operations and system failures, along with appropriate resolutions, to provide support to operations on unplanned maintenance
  • This is a three-state organization and this position may include the supervision, assignment, and prioritization of a team of P&C Engineers located across all regions of Eversource

Desired Qualifications

  • Emphasis in Power Systems is desired
  • Supervisory experience preferred
