Job Summary

Conduct initial patient consultations, assessments, and ongoing care for cardiac surgery patients throughout their inpatient stay. Perform technical, clinical, and critical procedures including chest tube placement/removal, intubation/extubation, and central line management. Develop practice guidelines, clinical pathways, and educational curricula with cardiac surgeons while maintaining accurate patient records and charting. Coordinate staffing needs, timekeeping, and new hire orientation scheduling. Participate in departmental quality assurance projects, chart audits, and emergency re-opening of sternal incisions as required. Serve on hospital-wide committees to promote patient safety and system effectiveness.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced Practice Provider Cardiac Surgery certification or equivalent credential
  • Ability to examine patients and formulate diagnoses
  • Ability to develop treatment plans for patients
  • Ability to perform technical, clinical, and critical procedures
  • Ability to place and remove chest tubes
  • Ability to intubate and extubate patients
  • Ability to place and remove central lines and arterial lines
  • Ability to re-open sternal chest incisions in emergency situations
  • Ability to develop practice guidelines and clinical pathways
  • Ability to develop and implement educational curriculum for staff
  • Ability to participate in department/hospital-wide committees
  • Ability to identify, plan, and coordinate staffing needs and timekeeping
  • Ability to assess patients by interview and obtain/update medical history
  • Ability to document patient care services in records
  • Ability to perform physical examinations
  • Ability to recognize and evaluate patients requiring immediate physician attention
  • Ability to initiate emergency medical treatment
  • Ability to utilize diagnostic techniques (observation, palpation, percussion, auscultation)
  • Ability to administer or order diagnostic tests and laboratory studies
  • Ability to follow up on x-rays and laboratory data
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic test results
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete patient records
  • Ability to develop and implement patient management plans
  • Ability to record procedure and progress notes
  • Ability to provide discharge summaries
  • Ability to respond to consult requests as per physician assignment
  • Ability to actively listen to coworkers
