Job Summary

Lawyer role within Suffolk County Council's Legal Team (Disputes and Safeguarding) undertaking civil litigation and dispute resolution, advocacy in proceedings, and providing expert legal advice. Two permanent posts available: one in the Disputes team and one in Safeguarding. Responsibilities include representing the Council in civil proceedings, handling childcare caseloads (pre-proceedings and court applications), adoption-related duties for safeguarding, and for Enforcement matters covering planning, fire and rescue, and trading standards. Requires strong research, drafting, communication, and case-management skills, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear guidance. Grade 6 (£40,777) or Grade 7 (£53,788) depending on experience, pro rata for part-time. Full-time hours are 37 per week with flexible working options; hybrid working arrangement based in Ipswich, Suffolk.

Required Qualifications

  • To be a Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive.
  • Honours degree (preferably in law) or significant experience as a Lawyer.
  • Post-graduate level qualification in law or equivalent experience (Desirable).
  • Grade 7 requires 3+ years of legal experience since qualification and/or ability to demonstrate relevant legal skills.
  • 3+ years of experience as a solicitor/barrister/legal executive or equivalent.
  • As a Grade 6 Lawyer you must be a Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive with an honours degree (preferably in law) and post-graduate qualification desirable.
  • Able to manage high volumes of documentation and provide clear advice.
