Job Summary
Law Clerk I to support the Department of Justice, Executive Office for United States Attorneys across U.S. Attorney Offices. Responsibilities include working with AUSAs and supervisory attorneys to identify defenses or violations, staying current on applicable federal/state/local laws, flagging potential issues, handling habeas corpus and immigration habeas matters, docketing and calendaring, drafting responses and proposed orders, and supporting litigation through all phases from discovery to appeal. Qualified applicants will have a law degree or have completed at least two years of ABA-accredited law study, be licensed by a state bar, and possess strong legal research and Microsoft Office skills; position may require up to 25% travel and is located within commuting radius of a USAO office with remote work possible within the U.S. DOJ citizenship is required for DOJ MBI eligibility.
Required Qualifications
- Requires Law degree or having completed at least two years of study at an ABA-accredited law school
- Licensed by a state bar
- Must have valid State driver’s license
- Minimum two (2) years of professional work experience and expertise in performing the requisite responsibilities
- Works under the direction of a Litigation Support Specialist 4 or a Project Manager
- Performs complex legal research for the trial staff
- Assists in preparing draft legal documents, such as motions, briefs, memoranda of law, etc.
- Screens documents for privilege
- Assists attorneys with all phases of litigation
- Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources
- Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of standard legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw
- Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and imaging
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to make responsible decisions on short notice and adapt to unexpected developments
- Physically located within the general geographic commuting radius of the USAO office
- DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US Citizenship required)
