Job Summary
Laboratory Assistant responsibilities include collecting blood specimens and handling/processing specimens for laboratory testing, performing pre-analytic and post-analytic tasks, entering patient registration and test orders, maintaining specimen integrity and quality documentation, operating basic pre-analytic lab equipment, and ensuring regulatory compliance and patient safety. The role involves coordinating specimen collection, labeling, and transport, communicating results, and supporting lab workflow in a hospital setting. Licensure/certification requirements include CPTI/CPT/CPTII and BLS, with CA-specific prerequisites.
Required Qualifications
- High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
- Associate's/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
- Experience in Phlebotomy in acute care environment: Preferred
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPTI) license: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
- Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII): Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
- Collects blood specimens for a variety of Laboratory tests using age-appropriate techniques
- handles/transports Lab specimens and provides post-phlebotomy care to patients
- Receives specimens for testing; assesses specimens upon receipt according to established criteria to determine acceptability and action per protocol
