Laboratory Animal Services Operations Manager

Job Summary
Oversee the biomedical research facility operations for ~10,000 cages (40,000 sq. ft.) of laboratory animals across two buildings and five facilities. Interface with the Director of Laboratory Animal Services, campus facilities, construction project managers, third-party vendors, and federal regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with federal regulations in a biomedical research setting. Directly and indirectly manage 29–30 facility staff to maintain high standards in training, husbandry, and facility operations. Lead interactions with investigators, lab members, and union husbandry staff; manage staff, drive initiatives within husbandry operations, and collaborate with veterinary personnel on animal health and care. Develop and enforce departmental policies, SOPs, and training programs; oversee space allocation for laboratory animals; coordinate procurement of capital equipment and supplies; manage contractual maintenance programs; participate in facility construction project updates; liaise with Thomas Jefferson University Facilities on infrastructure. Demonstrate understanding of The Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, PHS Policy, and the Animal Welfare Act; be proficient with equipment common to biomedical facilities (e.g., tunnel and rack washers, various cage types, automated systems); communicate effectively across the institution to address critical issues in research support; and apply critical thinking during facility emergencies and when meeting stakeholder goals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
- At least 5 years of laboratory animal research facility experience with supervisory experience
- Knowledge of PHS Policy and Animal Welfare Act
- Experience with regulatory site preparation
- AALAS Membership is required (AAALAS Certifications and CMAR certifications preferred)
- CMAR certifications and LAMA membership preferred
