Job Summary
Receive, accession, process, and distribute laboratory specimens for all patient populations, ensuring accurate identification, labeling, and routing per protocols. Utilize laboratory systems to monitor incoming samples, prioritize workflow, and track pending or delayed specimens while applying critical thinking to resolve discrepancies and integrity issues. Interact with phlebotomy staff, nursing, providers, and couriers to address specimen-related problems and maintain strict adherence to local, state, and federal regulations. Perform urine drug screen collection and breathalyzer testing, attending required certification classes. Complete mandatory training within the first year to qualify for promotion to Lab Assistant.

- Ability to perform job duties and assigned tasks with accuracy, reliability, and precision
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload to meet established turnaround times and testing deadlines
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with laboratory staff and clinical partners to resolve specimen issues
- Ability to maintain attention to detail while performing repetitive tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to appropriately respond to fluctuations in specimen volume
- Ability to appropriately respond to unexpected situations or problems such as equipment, courier delays, or system failures
- Ability to appropriately respond to shift-to-shift hand-offs and continuity of workflow
- Ability to appropriately respond to STAT and time-sensitive specimen processing requirements
- Ability to appropriately respond to specimen integrity issues that exceed acceptable thresholds (e.g., labeling discrepancies, insufficient volume, improper collection, or transport)
- Ability to perform urine drug screen collection and breathalyzer testing on clients requiring this testing
- Ability to pass this certification for urine drug screen collection and breathalyzer testing
