Job Summary
Perform blood collection on all patient populations using positive patient identification devices and critical thinking to resolve difficult draws. Execute additional non-blood specimen collections, including sputum and fecal samples, while adhering to all local, state, and federal regulations for privacy and safety. Respond to workflow fluctuations, equipment failures, STAT orders, and specimen integrity issues through organized task completion and effective communication with nursing staff, providers, and patients. Complete required Laboratory Support Services training within the first year to qualify for promotion to Lab Assistant.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to perform job duties and assigned tasks with accuracy, reliability and precision
- Ability to be organized to complete job duties and assigned tasks within expected timeframes
- Ability to compassionately and effectively interact with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behaviors
- Ability to appropriately respond to fluctuations in volume
- Ability to appropriately respond to unexpected situations or problems such as equipment or IS failure
- Ability to appropriately respond to shift-to-shift hand-offs
- Ability to appropriately respond to STAT and time-sensitive test orders
- Ability to appropriately respond to specimen integrity issues that exceed threshold (e.g., labeling discrepancies, insufficient volume, improper collection, or transport)
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, frequently walk several miles per shift, and perform repetitive physical tasks
- Must be able to navigate multiple patient care areas throughout the workday
