Job Summary

Lab Manager to direct, coordinate, and manage laboratory operations for the Handelsman Lab and the Lucida Project, including large-scale human sample collection efforts and management of the project’s expansive digital dataset. The role serves as a key communication liaison between the Principal Investigator, project lab members, and external collaborators, and is responsible for coordinating meetings and ensuring participation of appropriate personnel. Responsibilities include tracking and supporting IRB requirements and biosafety protocols, maintaining lab supply inventory and equipment, managing vendor relationships, handling Material Transfer Agreements, onboarding/offboarding lab members, maintaining HazMat shipping certification, developing safety documentation, and delivering trainings on scientific experimentation, technical procedures, and equipment operations. Supervisory duties, budget monitoring, policy development, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards are included, with emphasis on coordinating complex operations within a multidisciplinary research environment at UW–Madison’s Wisconsin Institute for Discovery.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Required degree in microbiology or a closely related field
  • Laboratory techniques in microbiology, molecular biology
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Strong organizational, coordination, and time-management skills
  • Ability to work with diverse members of the laboratory from many scientific disciplines with various levels of training
  • Ability to supervise others with respect, compassion, and kindness
