Job Summary
Keeper role overseeing zookeeper duties in the Audubon Zoo with a focus on Central and South American species, including training and behavioral enrichment, guest engagement, and education programs. Responsibilities include maintaining daily health and behavior observations, feeding procedures, wildlife research and conservation activities, supervising interns and volunteers, leading group projects, and ensuring safety in handling exotic animals. The role requires strong time-management, ability to work with dangerous animals (carnivores and alligators), and a commitment to conservation messaging and guest experience. The position offers cross-training opportunities across Louisiana Swamp and Jaguar Jungle, and may be offered at Senior Keeper level with substantial relevant experience.
Required Qualifications
- High School degree or equivalent
- College credits in Biology or related field
- Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
- Must maintain a valid La. Driver’s License
- Current TB test
- Current Tetanus shot
- Current rabies vaccinations as required by department (Audubon Institute to cover if hired)
- Must be Covid vaccinated
- Excellent safety track record
- Strong knowledge of zoonotic diseases and prevention
- Diverse and strong knowledge of principles of captive exotic animal management
