Job Summary
K9 Handler responsible for armed canine detection program in the Atlanta, GA area. Duties include obtaining and maintaining required canine certifications, certifying with the assigned canine for employment, health and welfare of the canine, maintaining training and utilization records, annual certifications, and executing searches as directed. Role requires physical fitness to lift/carry the canine and equipment, driving responsibilities, strict adherence to firearms policies, and ensuring a suitable residence/kennel for housing the working dog. Travel and on-call demands include incident/emergency response, standby duty, client demonstrations, weekends, holidays, nights, and overnights.
Required Qualifications
- Single purpose canine handler certificate or ability to obtain prior to commencing work
- Dual purpose canine handler certificate or ability to obtain prior to commencing work
- Three (3) or more years law enforcement canine handling experience or three (3) or more years military canine handling experience or substantially similar experience
- Expressed willingness to remain with the program for at least three years
- Expressed willingness to house the canine at the handler’s residence in accord with company policies
- Provide a secure outdoor area for the canine that conforms to company requirements
- Possess strong desire to work with canines and to train the animal
- Demonstrate physical fitness related to lifting, carrying, climbing, balancing with canine and equipment
- Must demonstrate overall fitness consistent with requirements of newly certified officers
- Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record for last three years
- Must maintain company-assigned vehicle and comply with fleet management policies
- Must pass firearms training and department qualification for carrying on duty
- Must complete prescribed assessment tools for armed work
- Prior to selection, ensure residence can accommodate a canine and kennel with necessary space and safety measures
- Residence may require signage indicating a dog is on the property
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 90 pounds including the canine for 50 feet
- Must be able to walk extended periods
- Requires climbing, squatting, bending, kneeling
- Kneel and squat for up to 1-2 minutes
- Must be able to run 1 mile
- Must comply with all firearms-related certifications and licensing
