Job Summary
Armed K9 Handler responsible for maintaining and certifying a working canine; duties include incident/emergency response, standby duty, client demonstrations (including weekends, holidays, nights, and overnights), maintaining training and utilization records, and conducting searches as directed. Requires holding or obtaining single- and dual-purpose canine handler certificates, 3+ years of law enforcement or military canine handling experience, ability to house and train the canine at the handler’s residence, ability to provide a secure outdoor kennel, physical fitness to lift/carry the canine and equipment, and valid driver’s license with a clean record. Must comply with firearms training and weapon handling requirements, and be prepared for a 90-day probationary period and a three-year commitment to the program.
Required Qualifications
- Single purpose canine handler certificate or ability to obtain prior to commencing work
- Dual purpose canine handler certificate or ability to obtain prior to commencing work
- Three (3) or more years law enforcement canine handling experience, or three (3) or more years military canine handling experience
- Expressed willingness to remain with the program for at least three years
- Provide secure outdoor area for the canine that conforms to company policies
- Strong desire to work with canines and train the animal
- Demonstrate physical fitness abilities (lifting, carrying, climbing, balancing with canine and equipment)
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record for last three years
- Be able to maintain annual canine certifications
- Adhere to firearm training and department qualification requirements
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to house a canine at residence per policy
- Must be able to pass prescribed assessments for armed work
