Juvenile Probation Officer

Job Summary
Monitor juvenile offenders to ensure adherence to court orders, conducting pre-sentence investigations, home and school visits, and fieldwork to assess compliance with conditions. Develop case management plans, prepare pre-sentence reports, and recommend further probation conditions or initiate petitions to revoke probation. Manage caseloads ranging from low to high-risk individuals, including those under electronic monitoring, while coordinating with treatment providers and reviewing periodic reports. Conduct investigations into offender criminal history and family backgrounds, compile case files, and attend court hearings. Maintain records of all contacts and monitor restitution, fine payments, and urinalysis testing. Operate a motor vehicle and specialized equipment while responding to emergency situations on a rotation schedule.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalency
- Must be 21 years of age
- Idaho POST certification
- Ongoing training to maintain current certification
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Idaho driver's license
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Sufficient personal mobility, agility, and physical strength and reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Flexible schedule and non-traditional work hours
- On-call to respond to emergency situations
- Knowledge of human and criminal behavior, with emphasis on juvenile and adolescent behaviors
- Knowledge of interviewing, counseling, and investigative techniques applicable to case monitoring
- Knowledge of Federal, Idaho, and County statutes, laws, codes, and regulations governing juvenile arrest, detention, probation/parole
- Knowledge of Court practices and procedures
- Knowledge of Departmental programs, policies, procedures, and operations as applied to the work performed
- Knowledge of Various evaluation and treatment programs, social and service agencies, and other community resources available to offenders
- Knowledge of Conflict resolution and mediation techniques, methods, and objectives
- Knowledge of Operation of standard office equipment, including a personal computer
- Ability to Gather and analyze facts and evidence and draw logical and objective conclusions
- Ability to Readily adapt to changing work situations and assignments
- Ability to Maintain a professional demeanor during stressful, volatile, and hostile situations
- Ability to Compile pertinent data and prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports
- Ability to Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to Establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned offenders, service providers, supervisors, other County employees, defense and prosecuting attorneys, the public, and other County and state agencies
- Ability to Respond to citizen requests in a courteous and effective manner
- Ability to Understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions
- Ability to Make sound and reasonable decisions in accordance with laws, codes, regulations, and established procedures
- Ability to Operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer and applications appropriate to assigned duties
- Ability to Operate a motor vehicle
- Ability to Operate specialized equipment such as electronic monitoring and personal defense devices
- Ability to Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines
- Ability to Perform multiple tasks, including handling interruptions, and return to and complete tasks in a timely manner
- Ability to Perform time management and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set project priorities
- Ability to Maintain offender and Department confidentiality
- Ability to Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, behavioral or social sciences, or a related field
- Two (2) to three (3) years experience in probation monitoring, social service, or court-related behavioral services
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work
