Job Summary
Monitor and analyse technical, regulatory and policy developments in electricity systems and markets at the global, regional and country level. Contribute to the modelling of the medium-term electricity forecast by developing, operating and maintaining power sector models. Support the Division's analytical output on grids, system flexibility and regulation, including updating databases on electricity demand, supply and grids. Draft quantitative and qualitative analysis for the IEA's flagship annual Electricity report and working papers for senior management. Provide support for meetings of IEA standing committees and other international organisations. This two-year fixed-term role within the Electricity Systems and Markets Division focuses on power systems and markets with a particular emphasis on grids.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced university degree or PhD in Electrical / Power / Energy Systems Engineering, Energy Economics, Physics or a related discipline
- A minimum of three years experience of direct power systems work experience in the electricity industry, economic consulting or grid technology companies working on transmission or distribution networks, system operation, energy management and related fields
- Strong technical background in power systems
- Experience working with power utilities and/or grid operators
- In-depth understanding of electricity security concepts, power market fundamentals, and the interaction between system operations and market incentives
- Solid knowledge of medium- and low-voltage distribution grids, with an understanding of the frameworks governing connection processes and the integration of distributed energy resources
- Excellent command of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
- Solid knowledge of relevant coding languages (e.g. Python, R)
- Excellent written and oral command of English, including drafting and proofreading
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with network planning and operational practices aimed at enhancing the efficiency and utilisation of existing infrastructure
- Experience with power system modelling, such as steady‐state network modelling, dynamic and transient stability modelling, or grid planning and expansion studies
- Experience with data visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau) and database management (SQL)
- Experience with optimisation models and platforms such as Pyomo, PyPSA or GAMS
- Knowledge of one or more other working languages
