Junior Mechanical Engineer, Bureau of Environmental Disease Prevention

Job Summary
Under direct supervision, perform elementary environmental engineering work and receive training at the Staff Engineering Intern level. Responsibilities include promoting indoor air quality strategies, developing guidelines for building ventilation and environmental controls, conducting literature and policy reviews, and providing engineering and scientific expertise to mitigate airborne hazards. Ensure compliance with NYC/NYC mechanical codes, identify cost-effective strategies to improve indoor air quality in buildings, evaluate window fall prevention device submissions, review variance applications and new device approvals for residential buildings, conduct onsite inspections, prepare clear written review comments and reports, and represent the department on internal/external task forces. Also assist with preparing related reports and maintaining records. Preferred skills include knowledge of IAQ science and assessment tools, familiarity with ASHRAE 62.1/62.2 and the DOB Mechanical Code, and strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal abilities; familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is a plus.
Required Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work
