Job Summary
Conduct daily research, documentation, and teaching support for the x̄á'isla language by collaborating with fluent speakers and senior staff. Actively learn and practice the language and orthography while assisting in creating translations, interpretations, and analyses of language materials. Update and maintain the xa'isla dictionary and digital resources, develop curriculum and lesson plans, and co-facilitate language classes and workshops. Archive and maintain language documents, participate in community training and mentorship, and support others on their language learning journeys. This role contributes to the Haisla Nation's mission of preserving and revitalizing the x̄á'isla language within the Kitamaat Village community.
Required Qualifications
- Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant)
Desired Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is an asset
- A combination of relevant education and/or experience may also be deemed acceptable
- Experience or some knowledge with the x̄á'isla language and orthography (or willingness to learn)
- Experience with archiving and recording equipment is an asset
- Experience in teaching, tutoring, or language learning is an asset
- Strong interest in x̄á'isla language revitalization and cultural preservation
- Ability to problem-solve and use critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations
- Ability to respond to a dynamic environment with flexibility, sensitivity, compassionate and empathy
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point) and Outlook/email
- Knowledge of First Nations Culture and working in a First Nation's community is an asset
