Job Summary
Junior Claims and Demurrage Officer to support the effective handling, negotiation and resolution of demurrage claims and shipping costs, ensuring timely recovery, contractual compliance and strong coordination across trading, operations and chartering functions. Responsibilities include checking and handling demurrage claims and freight invoices, analyzing contracts and voyage documents, negotiating with customers, invoicing and pursuing payment, maintaining accurate records and reports, developing relationships with traders and brokers, providing commercial support to Trading/Chartering/Operations/Risk, and occasional travel. Required skills include strong negotiation, interpersonal and communication abilities, understanding of contracts and laytime/demurrage provisions, proficiency in Microsoft Office, the ability to work under pressure, and a proactive, self-driven approach. English proficiency and willingness to learn are emphasized.
Required Qualifications
- Up to 3 years of relevant experience in a petroleum trading company or in the demurrage department of a tanker ship management company
- Experience with tankers and barges is a plus
- Bachelor’s or higher degree – preferably in Law/Shipping or related field
- Eager to learn and develop within the industry
- Competent in day to day correspondence
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Strong negotiation skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Good understanding of contracts, charter-parties and key laytime/demurrage provisions and the terminology associated with the petroleum industry commodities is a plus
- Strong facilitation, planning, organizational, analytical and teamwork skills
- Computer Literate in Microsoft Suite, experience in commercial systems and ability to learn new ones
- Proactive and able to work on own initiative
- Proven ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
