Job Summary
Operate facility overhead cranes, bucket trucks, and forklifts while providing rigging for lifting equipment. Weld horizontally, overhead, and vertically using oxy-acetylene, AC-DC electric arc, M.I.G., and T.I.G. methods on stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and copper. Fabricate, install, and maintain complex tubing systems, mechanical control test panels, and cryogenic systems including liquid hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and helium. Disassemble and repair valves, valve operators, and pressure regulators while verifying hardware material compatibility with high-temperature fuel systems. Perform general maintenance on mechanical vacuum pumping equipment, heat exchangers, and cryogenic vaporizers. Assist in the installation and operation of intricate research test packages and operate large mechanical tools such as lathes, grinders, and drill presses. Conduct inspection and evaluation of mechanical equipment to make maintenance recommendations. Work rotating shifts with overtime as needed at the NASA Glenn Research Center.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years working experience as a Journeyman Level Mechanic
- Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of research test facilities and associated equipment
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision
- Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of work flow
- Must be self-motivated
- Must be a Team Player
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness
Desired Qualifications
- Completion of a 4-year State approved apprenticeship program with a Journeyman's certificate
- Equivalent vocational school training with sufficient combined work experience and skills
