Job Summary
Install and align major equipment and propulsion systems including main engines, gear boxes, pumps, shafts, jet drives, propellers, and rudders. Form, fit, and fabricate structural machinery foundations and sub-assemblies using steel or aluminum per blueprints, employing MIG and Arc welding. Lay out, cut, form, machine, and prepare work assignments using a variety of mounted and hand power tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders. Test and inspect machine parts to ensure tolerances meet owner specifications and regulatory requirements while maintaining a clean work area and adhering to safety policies. Occasionally provide relief for Inside Machinist by building custom components through lathe, milling, drilling, and molding operations.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ Years' experience as a Machinery Assembler, or Machinist (Journeyman)
- High School Education or equivalent or vocational education
- Knowledge of shipyard safety practices and vessel terminology
- Ability to read, interpret specifications, and work from drawings and blueprints
- Ability to understand and apply basic math skills
- Able to understand and perform basic mathematics
- Knowledge of basic hand and power tools
- Understanding and experience with lathe and milling machines
- Ability to work overtime as necessary
- Proficiency in converting from SAE to metric and from fractions to decimals
- Experience working around heavy machinery
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work at heights of 60 ft.
- Ability to enter confined spaces using a respirator, and work in small workspaces at odd angles
- Ability to work overtime as necessary

Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience in a shipyard (new construction or repair) or marine construction environment
- Experience and proficiency with laser alignment (i.e. Rotoline, Pinpoint)
- Certification as a Shipyard Competent Person
- Experience and Proficiency working with multiple alloys / materials (for example, Steel and Aluminum)
- Working knowledge and understanding of applicable NAVSEA standard items
- OSHA 10- Certification
- Certification and experience in use of forklifts and manlifts
- Interest in and aptitude for taking on future crew leadership roles
