Job Summary
The Copyright Specialist II reviews and renews copyright licenses for third party resources used in TRU Open Learning and on-campus publications and course materials. Responsibilities include reviewing third party resources, negotiating license terms, preparing payment requests, updating databases to reflect clearance status, ensuring compliance with policies related to third party materials, escalating as needed, recommending alternate sources, and participating in planning workshops and events for faculty and staff. Requires strong written and verbal communication, proficiency with Word and Excel, and knowledge of copyright practices in post-secondary education in Canada and the U.S. This role reports to the Supervisor of Editing and Copyright and involves long periods at a computer with some lifting of documents.
Required Qualifications
- Grade 12 plus six months of post-secondary education
- Three years of related experience including: Three years with electronic word processing and data entry
- Three years of experience related to intellectual property administration (copyright or trademark administration)
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with faculty, staff, students and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- General knowledge and understanding of copyright law and practices related to the post-secondary educational environment, both in the U.S. and Canada
- Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete tasks independently with minimal direction and supervision; analyze and resolve issues; originate own work; and manage workload with changing priorities and periodic interruptions
- Demonstrated intermediate skills using Word and Excel
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and attend to fine details with accuracy and thoroughness
- Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain files and databases, including use of a diarized system
- Experience searching for information on the Internet and through library search systems
